To understand how improved technology could decrease marine bird bycatch (the accidental killing of birds in fishing activities), we recruited eco-minded technologists and designers from hackathons and design jams in the Pacific Northwest. Once on board, they joined seabird scientists for our very own 1.5 day Squawkathon. At the event, made possible by the David & Lucile Packard Foundation, three teams developed three novel approaches for keeping endangered birds out of fishing nets. This is one of several ways to source new ideas that are showcased in the forthcoming Starter Kit that we developed in collaboration with the David & Lucile Packard Foundation. Take a look behind the design with this short video.
